How to Retain Senior Employees and Stop Brain Drain
How to Retain Senior Employees and Stop Brain DrainHow to Retain Senior Employees and Stop Brain DrainHow to Retain Senior Employees and Stop Brain Drain RossheimWith the labor market, the stock market and 401(k)s all on the rebound, senior managers who have been hunkered down for five years are now considering their employment options. To avoid a brain drain, smart companies are reassessing their employee retentionstrategies for how to retain senior employees. Here are eight top retentionstrategies for 2014.Top talent wants top challenges. First, beware of anyone who tries to sell you on a gimmick for retaining top employees. Remember that more than anything else, top talent simply wants to be exercised.Thats why taking on responsibility and working on challenging tasks are the career-enhancing opportunities that executives cited most frequently in a survey reported in the Wall Street Journal by Elizabeth Craig, John Kimberly and Peter Cheese. Its the money, stupid. Of course, many of us mere mortals are motivated by big financial carrots that can be claimed in a year or five. For senior employees, a competitive salaryis only part of the story. In 2014, the chief forms of deferred compensation for retention of executives are stock options, long term incentive plans (LTIPs), profit sharing with vesting and a 401(k) match with vesting, says Charley Polachi, managing partner at Polachi Access Executive Searchin Boston. What matters to young Boomers and old Xers. Lets face it Todays multigenerational workforcediffers when it comes to retaining senior employees.Executives in their 40s or 50s have been around for a while, and theyre driven by influence and power, says Angelo Kinicki, a professor at the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. They want to stay in an organization that gives them opportunities to make change. What matters to Millennials and younger Xers. Younger, fast-rising managers may be looking for more coaching and better preparatio n for furtherbei advancement particularly with masteringsoft skills.Execs in their 30s have often been promoted without having all the skills from managing people to interpreting financial statements that they might need, says Kinicki. What might keep them at their companies is the opportunity to train and to be on projects where they can hone those skills.Fit the retention tactic to the person. It should come as no surprise that many executives who have made unique contributions to the enterprise will not be enticed by generic efforts aimed at retaining senior employees.One-size-fits-all retention packages are usually unsuccessful in persuading a diverse group of key employees to stay. Instead, companies should tailor retention approaches to the mindsets and motivations of specific employees (as well as to the express nature of the changes involved), says a report by consulting firm McKinsey Co.But beware inequity and jealousy. If, in your efforts to retain senior workers, you d o offer one executive a customized perk for continued loyalty to the company, dont expect that her peers wont be miffed if they learn of it.Anytime you individualize, you can create feelings of inequity, says Kinicki. So you need to be very careful about it. But in the end, you have to reward those who deserve it, to get them to stay. Even for upper management, work/life balance is a draw. More and more, executives who have given up a lot on the personal side to excel in business and have earned a measure of financial independence in the process want to reclaim some balance in their lives.Thats why even at the executive level, workplace flexibilityhas become a key recruitment tool and a way to retain older workers, says Katie Bouton, president of Koya Leadership Partnersin Newburyport, Mass.Consider offering sabbaticals. An extended period of paid time off may be the ultimate loyalty-builder for top talent. Executives who took a sabbatical have told me, This is a wonderful perk th e company cares about me as an individual, they want me to have the opportunity to regenerate, says Frank Faeth, principal at Faeth Consultingin Bronxville, N.Y. People come back recharged and refocused, and they say they feel more tightly aligned with the company. What if the executive uses the time to find a new employer? If executives who take sabbaticals end up leaving the company, so be it, says Faeth. If they believe theyd be happier elsewhere, then its best for everyone that they move on.Even the toughest execs are seeking meaning. As many senior managers seek more balance in their lives, many will also stay with an employer longer if the company connects to its community or otherwise provides meaning beyond the bottom line.Private enterprises might borrow a page from the non-profit sector, says Bouton. Non-profits leverage employee engagement with the meaning that senior executives find in the work. At nonprofits, senior executives believe in what theyre doing.

6 Solid Reasons to Leave Your Good Job - The Muse
6 Solid Reasons to Leave Your Good Job - The Muse6 Solid Reasons to Leave Your Good JobSometimes in your career, there are unterstellung giant, flashing, neon signs that seem to yell, Hey, you Yeah, you with the miserable look on your face Its time for you to blow this popsicle stand and find yourself a new gig.Maybe you hate your boss or your responsibilities make you want to cry. Perhaps youve been consistently skipped over for promotions. Or, maybe youre blatantly mistreated.Either way, its painfully obvious to you that you need to leave your job. But, other times? Well, the signs that are telling you its time to hit the road are far too easy to cruise right by. In fact, theyre often missed altogether and simply written off as a normal part of being employed. What sort of cryptic hints am I talking about? Well, here are six not-so-obvious signs you should probably dust off that resume and look for something new.1. Youre Always UnmotivatedYou get your work done. But, youll also be t he first to admit that its a daily struggle. Forcing yourself to sit at your desk and trudge your way through your to-do list feels like a feat of superhuman strength. And, you find that- instead of aiming to go above and beyond- youre always scraping by with the bare minimum.Listen, we all have those days when wed rather be doing anything else. However, that shouldnt be the day-to-day norm in your job. If you find yourself feeling constantly lazy, unmotivated, and just plain disinterested? That could be a clear indicator that its time to look for something that will set your heart on fire again. 2. Youve Been Doing the Same Thing Since Day OneYouve worked in your current role for a while. When you compare what you do today to your very first day on the job? Everything looks pretty much identical. You havent been challenged to push your boundaries and accept new assignments. You havent had the opportunity to take on additional responsibilities. In fact, its tough for you to find a si ngle thing thats changed or grown in the course of your tenure. Feeling comfortable and confident in your career is one thing. But, feeling glued in place? Thats an entirely separate problem. When you begin to realize that youre stuck in neutral, that might mean its time to either speak with your boss (this article has some great tips), or find a new role that will allow you to expand your horizons a little more. 3. Your Stress Levels at a Constant HighYour stomachs always in knots. Your fingernails are practically nonexistent from your constant chewing. You cant seem to even take a two-minute bathroom break without checking your inbox.A certain amount of stress is normal- every job has those tasks or moments that inspire a bit of palm sweat or anxious lip chewing. And, maybe youre somebody who enjoys and thrives in a high-pressure and fast-paced environment. Hey, if stress is what motivates and fulfills you at work, more power to you But, if you discover that constantly feeling li ke a tangled bundle of nerves is really only dragging you down inside the office and out, its worth exploring some other opportunities where your stress level wont need to be at a constant high. 4. Youre IrritableYou find yourself snapping at your loved ones. The smallest annoyances can inspire an exasperated groan and an eye roll that could be seen from the space station. Even when youre clocked out for the day, you feel inexplicably grouchy. Have you considered the fact that your job could be the reason? As someone who had a position that turned her into a regular Debbie Downer without even realizing it, I know firsthand that your career can have a huge impact on how you feel outside of the office- for better or for worse. Are you far less irritable on the weekends? Chances are, your positions coloring your outlook more than you even care to admit. It might be time to search for greener (and happier) pastures. FACT IT NEVER HURTS TO LOOK AROUND AND SEE WHATS OUT THERESo why not spe nd five minutes looking at awesome job openingsjust click here 5. You Cant Remember the Last Time You Were Excited to Go to WorkAlright, there are very few of us who cartwheel out of bed on Monday. Nobody is always thrilled to head into work. But, if you cant remember the last time you felt the smallest inkling of excitement to tackle a new project, participate in a brainstorming session, or even dominate your offices guacamole competition? Thats a problem.Expecting to feel over-the-moon enthusiasm every single days unreasonable. However, if youre filled with a feeling of dread- even on days that are supposed to be easy or fun at work (hello, theres guacamole)- its in your best interest to find something that will reignite your passion. 6. Youve Considered Getting a New JobA few times, youve thought about quitting your job and finding something new. Sure, you never really gave the idea serious consideration or took any steps to actually make it happen. But, youve mulled it over a few times- you even mentioned it in passing over a shared appetizer with your friends.Thinking about job searching is sort of like trying to put toothpaste back in the tube- once its out there, its out there. Consider this If you were really all that satisfied with where you are now in your career, you likely wouldnt have even entertained the thought of jumping ship. Maybe- just maybe- your subconscious is trying to tell you something here. There can be a dangerously fine line between normal work grievances and red flags that indicate that its time for you to pack up your desk and find yourself a new job. Yes, all of these signs are easy to write off as problems that everybody deals with- theyre normal. But, the difference lies in consistency. If youre feeling, doing, or saying these sorts of things on a regular basis, thats symptomatic of more than just a bad workday. So, if you found yourself nodding along with one (or all) of these signs, it might be time to give some serious considera tion to finding yourself a new position.

Ways to Stay Positive Part 3
Ways to Stay Positive Part 3Ways to Stay Positive Part 3The job search doesnt have to be such a trying experience. Cancel the pity party, fill your days and focus on happiness first. In Part I and Part II of this series, I shared with you six of nine ways to remain positive during a job searchRelive past wins.If you cant get out of it, get into it.Visualize what you want.Anticipate and embrace change Dont be hijacked by it.Focus on strengths elend weaknesses.Remember Nietszche That which does not kill us makes us stronger. Now, for the final installment, here are three mora tips for keeping your game face on and ensuring you put your best foot forward as you move forth with your job search.1. Choose your friends wisely.Theres always room for one more at a pity party. And although the lure is attractive, you have to turn down the invitation. Misery does love company, but so does happiness. If you surround yourself with negative people youll be more negative. Conversely, if you connect regularly with people who have a positive outlook, youll find yourself smiling a lot more than you frown.Which of your colleagues brighten your day? What friends exude joy, instead of exhaustion, on the phone?By embracing your natural sense of optimism and can-do attribute and surrounding yourself with others with a similar outlook, youll find a way to make your job search productive and enjoyable. On a recent trip to San Diego, I spent over an hour at the American Airlines baggage carousel waiting for my luggage to arrive from my flight from JFK. Sure, it was frustrating (especially since the flight had been delayed eight hours). One woman decided she was going to throw a pity party and all 200 passengers were invited. She started to complain, loudly. She wasnt happy being miserable by herself, so she worked really hard to recruit those around her and several joined her to complain. Soon it became a mob. You could feel the tension and negative energy in the air and as each minute passed, it became more and more toxic. Although the lure was attractive, I knew I had to resist. It wasnt going to make my luggage arrive any quicker and it would have had a major impact on my demeanor for the coming days.Spend some time thinking about your personal support system and ensure it is filled with people who will help you see the bright side of every situation.Who are you hanging around with?2. When you feel empty, give to others.Out of a job? Volunteer. You cant spend your entire day on the job- search process you need a diversion. Nothing makes you realize how rich you are as contributing value to something about which you are passionate or working with those less fortunate. When you give, you get back a thousand times. Sure, giving money will make you feel good, but giving of your time, expertise and compassion will be far more beneficial to your attitude.Volunteering is the perfect activity. Its even been called the ultimate interview. You can choose to contribute your expertise to a cause furthering your thought leadership or take on a role that is 180 degrees away from your normal work activities to give you a new perspective. In either case, you will find your efforts fulfilling. Poet Kahlil Gibran once said, It is well to give when asked, but it is better to give unasked, through understanding. In addition to being a major attitude adjustment, volunteering has a positive impact on your job search as well. You get an opportunity to demonstrate your skills, collect interesting stories to discuss during a job interview and expand your network with the people you meet during your volunteer activities. These are the extra benefits that come with feeling good about yourself and your contributions.Giving back is not only good for your community or society, its good for your positivity quotient and for your candidature. How will you contribute to your community or society?3. Keep happiness top-of-mind.To be happy, you need to think happy and kn ow what things make you happy. One way to do this is to focus a little time every day exploring happiness and what it means to you. This idea comes from a fascinating woman I interviewed for the Reach Branding Club interview series. Her name is Gretchen Rubin, and she embarked on an adventure to understand what happiness is and how to get more of it. She suggests we can all benefit from being aware of what makes us happy and how we can bring more happiness into our lives. It seems like we should all know what makes us happy and how to attract more of it into our lives. But do you?Systematically thinking about happiness is not something we normally do we are much more focused on the mundane activities of work and life.Since my interview with Gretchen, I have been reflecting on what makes me happy by looking at everyday work activities and ranking them on a happiness scale. And from looking at the list, I learned three things about my workday that always make me happyWorking with peopl e (brainstorming and collaborating)Creating new content (presentations, articles, curricula)Delegating activities that involve details to people who love detailsIt was really valuable for me to spend focused time thinking about happiness. Now, as you search for your next big role, you too can explore what makes you happy. It will be valuable to your current mood and helpful to deciding among different career opportunities that come your way. You can learn about Gretchens happiness project at happiness-project.com/Ringling Bros. circus entrepreneur, P.T. Barnum, had it right when he said, Many people prefer happiness to success. Happiness is success. What makes you happy, and how can you get more of it?

Spring Clean Your Job Search in 10 Steps
Spring Clean Your Job Search in 10 StepsSpring Clean Your Job Search in 10 Steps11The weather is warmer, and the daisies and daffodils are starting to bloom. Theres no doubt about it- spring has definitely sprung. But if spring has you thinking about cleaning your home, take it one step further, job seeker, and spring clean your job search. Here are 10 simple steps to get you started1. Tidy up your techniques. If youve beenjob searchingfor some time, theres a good chance that youve developed some good habits- and some bad ones, too. In buchung to have a successful job search, though, youll need to evaluate exactly how youve been job searching. Maybe you dont respond immediately to hiring managers who are interested in scheduling a job interview. So take time to go over your job search habits and figure out which ones are working for you, and attempt to correct the ones that arent.2. Revamp your resume. If you thought that having the same resume style since 2010 was a good thing, think a gain. Resume styles change far more frequently than you might realize. Look online to see what some of the current styles are for resumes and cover letters, and adapt yours to stay current. Otherwise, youll date your resume- and yourself- in the process.3. Start getting social again.Theres something about winter that just makes you want to hunker down and sit in front of the TV. But springtime has the opposite effect youll naturally want to connect with friends and family more- and you should apply that friendly feeling to your job search, too. Start by breathing new life into yoursocial mediachannels- delete any posts or pictures that could be misinterpreted by a hiring manager doing his due diligence on you online, and make aya that your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and any other social media profile are professional and polished.4. Hone in on your home office.Yes, spring cleaning can be a lot of fun. After all, who doesnt like clearing the clutter and lettin g their space breathe? This principle definitely applies to your home office, too. Take the time to toss any papers that arent necessary, and rid your space of all that extra clutter that has found its way to your home office. You can take it one step further by freshening the space with fresh paint and flowers or a plant. If you want to ditch your desk, you can invest in new furniture, or simply rearrange your current ones. Having a new view can literally translate to a new view towards your job search.5. Attend to your attire.Lets face it when you are job searching, youre most likely spending it in your comfiest (but not prettiest) of clothes. So when a potential employer calls you in for an interview, you might panic. Thats why its important to make sure that you have an awesome job interview suit, or two in classic styles. Make the investment because it will last longer as opposed to something that is super trendy.6. Connect with companies.Youve had your eye on a few companies t hat you would love to work for. Thing is, theyre not posting any job listings that you qualify for. That shouldnt hold you back from reaching out, though. While you should definitely useniche job search boards that focus on flexible workwhen youre looking for a job with flex in it, you should still consider establishing contact with those companies, too as part of your job search. While there might not be any available positions in your field yet, your job application will be on the top of the pile when the position does become available.7. Pursue your passion. If youve been job hunting for months with no success, there might be a reason why. Maybe you subconsciously dont want the position youre after. Instead of continuing on in your search, take some time to really think about what youd like to do. Dont think about salary or what your spouse will think of it. Just clear your mind and think about what will make you happy. Then, try to find a job that incorporates all or some of thos e key factors of your dream job. It might require you to make a job change or even go back to school for advanced education or certifications. But in the end, it will all be worth it to find a position that fulfills you, both financially and emotionally.8. Try to track.Youre a diligent job seeker, applying for multiple positions on a daily basis. So its understandable when a hiring manager contacts you for a job interview- and you cant remember for the life of you the position that hes referring to. Even though its going to take a little more time out of your job search day, try to track each of the positions that you apply for. That way, when a potential boss contacts you, youll know the exact job he wants to interview you for.9. Know how to network.Networking can be uncomfortable, grueling, and a bore. We get it. But theres no denying the power that networking can have on your job search. So even if you hate it, try to incorporate it into your job search. You might only go to one event a month, or even attend a meeting online. But doing so can greatly improve your chances of getting hired sooner rather than later.10. How employers time-tracking systems steal from your salary
How employers' time-tracking systems steal from your salary How employers' time-tracking systems steal from your salary Nowadays, many employers rely on digital time-tracking software to monitor when employees are working. It may be more efficient than the punch clocks of yore, but a new study published in American Business Law Journal found that it contributes to wage theft and that hourly employees like nurses, drivers, and factory employees, are particularly vulnerable to losing their hard-earned money to digital time-tracking.âTime shavingâ and automative break deductions unfairly reduce hours actually workedElizabeth Tippett, associate professor at the University of Oregon School of Law, looked at 330 court cases to identify how digital wage theft happens through these tracking systems. She identified three patterns of how it happens:1. Automative break deductions, which âinvolves subtracting a preset increment of time (usually thirty minutes) from employee hours to reflect their scheduled meal break, regardless of whether the break is takenâ 2. Rounding, which happens when employers âset their timekeeping software to alter employee punch time in a preset incrementâ 3. Time shaving, which occurs âwhen supervisors alter employee time records to reduce recorded hoursâBreak deductions and rounding are a legal gray area. There are no explicit rules around them under The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).âExisting rules tacitly allow employers to extract unpaid labor from employees and make it very difficult for employees to reclaim the wages associated with such labor,â Tippett argues. Employees may not even realize they are being unfairly docked if they do not have electronic access to their own time records. And employees and consumers are not incentivized to change this. Digital wage theft happens often at the benefit of the employer keeping payroll low and the consumer getting lower prices for services.Tippett details the case of Jara Willis, a nurse in the intensive care unit of a Texas hospital, to demonstrate how employers get away with uncompensated labor. âThe hospital allotted [Willis] thirty minutes per day for a meal break, but i t was almost always interrupted or cut short with requests from âother nurses on the shift, from physicians, and from patients and their families,'â Tippett writes. âOver the four years [Willis] worked at the hospital, she could not recall a single uninterrupted meal break.âDigital time-tracking systems default in the employerâs favorEmployees like Willis get pay deducted for breaks they never have the chance to take, in other words. You only had a chance to nibble on a muffin for five minutes, but you still get thirty minutes of pay deducted. One solution to this, Tippet suggests, would be if the FLSA required employees to be paid for each hour worked.Tippett also suggests penalizing time shaving, because your manager altering time records is not a legally ambiguous practice - itâs clearly wage theft. Automatic break deductions should also ultimately be banned, Tippett recommends. We can also fight erroneous data collection with new technology that asks for more accura te timekeeping. Tippett suggests a âpop-up window at the end of the day that asks, âIt looks like you missed lunch. Is this accurate? (Yes or No).âUntil the law changes, employees will continue to be forced to work off the clock to meet their bossâ demands. To stop this, there would need to be more uproar around the unfairness of this. Tippett wants us all to question âwhether it is wise to extract uncompensated labor from those who care for our loved ones, and who process, transport, and serve the food we eat.â

C-Suite Talk With M.M. LAFLEURs Sarah LaFleur
C-Suite Talk With M.M. LAFLEUR's Sarah LaFleur C-Suite Talk With M.M. LAFLEUR's Sarah LaFleur Sarah LaFleur, Founder and CEO of M.M. LAFLEUR, talks to Ladders about dressing for success and her mission to rid the world of the pantsuit and replace it with beautiful attire for purposeful women.Sarah, what is M.M. LAFLEURâs mission? Why did you decide to start your own business? The mission of our company is simple: to create beautiful clothing for the purposeful woman.Originally we had said âprofessional womanâ instead of âpurposeful woman,â but I quickly realized that the former felt too narrow in scope for the women we are dressing. Let me explain: growing up I watched my mother, who was a PR executive at a luxury fashion brand, get ready for work every morning. Her sense of style is and has been the inspiration behind this company. She always managed to look sexy and professional, stylish and effortless. She wasnât just a âprofessional woman,â she was that and much more: a professional and a mother, a friend and a wife. You get the idea.I think thatâs the way most women live these days. Iâm so inspired by our customers, who we call our âAmpersand Women,â because they embrace the âandâ lifestyle and lead very fulfilling, even passionate, lives. Our aim is to create clothes that fit the Ampersand lifestyle.I think the fashion industry today doesnât cater to the Ampersand Woman. Mass-market brands are redundant and uninspiring, and so many luxury brands donât even pretend to care about or understand this customer. Thatâs why I wanted to create a brand that did.Prior to creating M.M. LAFLEUR you worked in a variety of fields, from nonprofit management groups to private equity firms. How have these experience shaped the way you run your business? Before launching this company, I worked in Paris and New York for a private equity firm where I managed its luxury goods portfolio and at Bain Co. in New York. I also spent a year in South Africa with agricultural entrepreneurs (yes, farmers can be entrepreneurs too!), trying to u nderstand the impact they could have on the countryâs food security. When I write them side by side, I realize how disparate these jobs must sound, but to me theyâve been part of one big journey: understanding how to make beautiful things responsibly, while reducing waste and finding opportunities for growth.I hate waste. This is probably largely a result of having a mother who grew up in post-WWII Japan, but Japan is obsessed with âmuda ni shinaiâ (ânot wastingâ) whether it be food or space, and I think that has had a massive impact on how I view business opportunities. There is a big amount of waste in fashion, both in terms of money and actual materials, which means there is a major opportunity to eradicate that waste, and fuel that into growth. One way weâre doing that is through selling our clothes directly to the customer, instead of selling through a department store. It means that department stores donât mark up our clothes by another two to four times, and we pass those savings onto the customer. We also only produce and sell clothes for which our customers have expressed clear demand. If no one wants it, we donât make it. It may sound simple, but thatâs a disruptive concept in fashion. What is the greatest challenge youâve encountered while starting your company? What advice would you give to someone whoâd like to turn their passion for fashion into a career?Entrepreneurship is so trendy these days, but no one talks about the other side of the coin. You might find newfound strength in pursuing your passion, but if youâre starting something on your own, initially, most likely, you are entirely on your own. There were a lot of long, quiet days in my apartment when I was refining my idea, before Miyako and Narie (my co-founders) joined. Itâs a particular kind of solitude; one that forces a lot of introspection, and creates a lot of self-doubt. To this day, that is the most difficult thing Iâve had to do in starting this busin ess.To someone wanting to turn their passion into a career, I would say, the first step is the hardest, and I would actually urge you be quite practical about it. The slogan of âjust do itâ is only so powerful if you have a place to sleep, eat, and yes, even relax. When you are starting out, donât be afraid to take a part-time job or do something on the side to support yourself while you get your business up and running. We often talk about dressing for success. What mistakes do professionals often make choosing their outfits for the office?Itâs a great question, but one we as a company donât always feel comfortable answering, because the implication is that professional women are doing something wrong. There are already so many stresses when you work a demanding job; itâs unfortunate that clothing is another opportunity for criticism.Thereâs an unwritten and very subtle rulebook for what women should wear to work, and it can vary widely between offices. Only through ke en observation while living within a particular office can you learn how it responds to differences in things like jewelry boldness, skirt length, and amount of self-expression. Often respected female leaders will silently define the code for other women in an office, so if you want to play it safe, you can work within the boundaries that those senior leaders have set by example. At M.M. LAFLEUR, we believe that professional wear can be sexy. Not the skin-tight, revealing kind of sexy, but the confidence-boosting, respect-demanding sexy. Donât feel like you have to dress like one of the boys to fit in, but do have the perspective to know what others think of what youâre wearing. What are some easy ways to update your professional wardrobe without breaking the bank? Do you recommend investing in any particular staple items? Our designer, Miyako, often says that an updated wardrobe starts with a refresh of the mind. She recommends something that makes you feel happy and refreshed (i .e. a colorful or ridiculously soft scarf, a unique belt, etc.). It doesnât necessarily have to be expensive. However, in general when building your wardrobe, I would recommend pursuing quality over quantity. Take time to find something you can cherish and take good care of for years to come. And itâs even better if you have an emotional connection to it. Miyako purchased her first pair of luxury high-heels with her first senior role paycheck, and they are still the beautiful and powerful pair of heels that she wears to her âimportantâ meetings.Any fashion tips for job seekers who are searching on the sly? How can they dress for lunchtime interviews without raising red flags at work? The beauty of a great work dress is that it can easily be repurposed. Wear a simple dark-colored dress, dressed up or down to the required level in your office. When you step out for your âdoctor appointmentâ, throw on a secretly stashed blazer and a simple pair of not-too-high-heels. Even th e most formal interview environments allow for the suit to be replaced by the dress-plus-blazer combination. When you get back to the office, put back on your scarf, flats, and cardigan- or whatever it is that brings you back to inconspicuousness. Thanks Sarah!Sarah Miyazawa Lafleur is the Founder and CEO of womenâs wear brand M.M.LAFLEUR. How to Address a Cover Letter
How to Address a Cover Letter How to Address a Cover Letter Youâve just composed a beautiful cover letter. Youâve expressed your enthusiasm for the role and the hiring company, youâve communicated what makes you uniquely qualified for the position, youâve included the employeeâs name who referred you to the roleâ¦youâve diligently followed everything ResumeSpice preaches about writing cover letters. Last, minor detail: to whom should you address your cover letter? Below are our suggestions, ranked in order from ideal to least effective: Address the letter directly to the hiring manager (i.e., Mr. Wilson) The ideal scenario is that you know the personâs name who is hiring for the role. You donât? Ok, time to do some research. The first step is to search LinkedIn for the hiring managerâs name. Many roles list the hiring manager directly in the job posting. Next, check the companyâs website to see if you can match the hiring manager to the person the role reports to, as outlined in the job description. Next, do you know someone at the company who can fill you in? Have you called into the company (without providing your name) and asked who the person is who is hiring for that role? It takes some effort and ingenuity, but addressing the letter directly to the hiring manager is one small factor that can help set your cover letter apart in a sea of generic applications. Dear Hiring Manager: When youâve exhausted all options for uncovering the hiring managerâs name, the next best option is to address the letter âDear Hiring Managerâ. This salutation makes it clear who youâre trying to contact and is slightly less generic than the other options listed below. To Whom It May Concern: The perfect salutation when applying for a position that was posted before 1980. This was âtheâ catch-all salutation for the pre-Internet years, but in a business culture that, for better or for worse, has become progressively less formal, âTo Whom It May Concernâ seems conspicuously outdated. Dear Sir/Madam: Ideal for situations where you are applying to be someoneâs butler. In all seriousness, we recommend avoiding this salutation ?? Interestingly, the results of a study by Saddleback College, in a survey of more than 2,000 companies, found that employers preferred the following greetings: Dear Hiring Manager (40%) To Whom It May Concern (27%) Dear Sir/Madam (17%) Dear Human Resources Director (6%) Leave it blank (8%) Hopefully the above information has helped shed some light on cover letter salutations. Need some help composing your cover letter? The team at ResumeSpice would love to help! If you would like to talk to a career consultant about how to â" ahem â" spice up your cover letter, give ResumeSpice a call or contact us to chat with one of our consultants about how our professional services can help you.

4 Reasons Job Postings Dont List Salary, And What to Do
4 Reasons Job Postings Dont List Salary, And What to Do 4 Reasons Job Postings Dont List Salary, And What to Do 6 As online job boards have become the preferred method of advertising for open positions today, many job seekers have noticed a downward trend in the number of job postings without salary and benefits details. Understandably, this can be a source of frustration to those looking for jobs, especially because the application process has become much more involved and time-consuming in recent years. Although the pursuit to have a career that fulfills you emotionally is a noble one, many job seekers have a specific degree, a number of years with progressing experience, or a personal bottom line that requires serious consideration of the salary that an opening offers. A position that clearly posts the associated salary range can save a job seeker a great deal of time and effort. If you have ever found yourself asking why salary isnt always listed on a job posting, we have some answers. Four reasons why job postings dont list salary: 1. Employers today have found itâs not necessary to list salary. In recent years, the trend has been to not include salary and benefits information in job listings. During the Great Recession spanning 2007 through 2009, human resource departments became inundated with job applications from professionals seeking work. It was at this time that employers found they no longer had to include salary information to attract high-quality applicants. Even though our economy has reached new highs in the aftermath of the Great Recession, many companies continued this trend, opting to list that the salary depends on experience (DOE) or is commensurate with experience. This means that employer will sift tailor its salary and the extent of its benefits package based on the level of knowledge and experience that a given candidate brings to the table. Perhaps a company is entertaining the notion of filling a role with either a younger employee whos hitting their career stride, but may require more training, or an achieved professional who has shown they can do the job, but might cost more money up front. While both options could be a strong fit, employers will consider several variables before naming their number. 2. Withholding salary gives employers more negotiating power. Employers want to find out as much as possible about a candidate before revealing details about income. In some cases, for example, companies with a remote workforce donât have to pay as much for employees living in rural areas with lower costs of living. Often, candidates from smaller towns are satisfied with a lower income than someone who lives in an expensive metropolitan city, though they may have the same skills. All of this information can play into an employers salary offer. When it comes to remote jobs, location is often a factor in how an employer sets the salary, says Brie Weiler Reynolds, senior career specialist and career coach. That changes things because you may be live hundreds or thousands of miles away from the office, or there may not be an office at all! To figure out what salary range you can expect, conduct your salary research using three locations: your location, the companys headquarters location, and a country-only search. With these three locations, youll see the broad range of your potential salary. 3. Employers want to avoid competition between current and new employees. In a perfect world, all employees doing the same job would make the same amount of money when they started out. Realistically, however, each employee brings individual skills and experiences to a job that makes them more or less valuable in terms of salary. The amount of money an individual is willing to settle for and their location are also factors that influence compensation. If companies posted salary information in job descriptions, current employees could easily view salary information for new hires and that could foster competition and unrest within the company. 4. Employers want to avoid competition between other companies within the industry. In todayâs market, companies also donât want to advertise their compensation packages because it makes them more vulnerable to their competition. Competing organizations could use salary information to win over candidates by offering them more money or target high-performing senior staffers within that organization. What to do when salary isnât included in a job posting: Three tactics. 1. Negotiate your salary. Many job seekers find it awkward to negotiate salary. They worry about how their request will be perceived and whether theyâll be viewed as demanding, greedy, or just not worth it. If youâve increased productivity, improved customer satisfaction, saved or earned a company money, or gone above the call of duty in other ways for former employers, be sure to talk about that and show how you can bring the same results to the company in which youâre applying. 2. Know before you go. Knowing everything you can about the company and the average pay for the job is crucial. Start with a simple Google search of the companyâs name and research the companyâs website. Glassdoor is another resource for finding inside information on companies from former and current employees. Glassdoor offers company reviews, salary reports, benefits reviews, and much more to help job seekers learn about prospective employers. Other useful resources for finding out the median salaries for a given occupation include PayScale and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. 3. Get it in writing. Once youâve negotiated a fair salary and accepted a position with your new employer, be sure to get your agreed-upon salary and benefits in writing. Doing so will eliminate any possible misinterpretations and offer you a paper trail of the final negotiations. Although itâs becoming less common to see salary information within a job posting, there are ways to gain a general understanding of what a specific position might pay. Being educated about the companies you apply to, their industry, and the job market is the best way to land a great job at a salary that works well for both you and the company. So even though there are reasons why salary isnt listed on a job posting, candidates can still be prepared to get what they want. Gap travel Finding your new career
Gap travel Finding your new career Gap travel Finding your new career Language and culture both bring people together through travel. A gap year abroad or an exchange student in your household can broaden horizons and open surprising doors. And sometimes behind the door is a new career in a far-off land. The makings of a French chefFor California high schooler Elizabeth Whitt, her eyes were opened when a Belgian student came to live in her familyâs home outside Pasadena. When she had the opportunity to take a gap year after high school, she landed in Belgium without knowing a word of French. But she picked up the language quickly and became conversant. She also visited Paris for the first time, setting up a lifelong love affair with the City of Light. In 1996, she returned to Paris for a semester abroad program through her school, Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, where she was majoring in Psychology with a minor in French. After college, she again looked to Europe. âWhen I applied to Le Cordon Bleu, I wanted to take a year off from my stud ies,â Elizabeth says. âI had just graduated college and wanted to postpone my doctorate program, so I decided the best way to do that would be in Paris at Le Cordon Bleu.â She had been contemplating various culinary schools while working in jobs she disliked, and in the end, Paris drew her back once more.Destiny steps inBorn in San Marino, California, coincidentally the birthplace of Julia Child, you could say that it was destiny that Elizabethâs culinary interests would take her to Paris. The Le Grand Diplome is a nine-month course designed to teach chefs and pastry chefs with additional studies offered in wine and other disciplines. Elizabethâs experience, however, quickly became much more intense than for other students. With her fluency in French, she was soon working as a translator which doubled her hours but also introduced her to people from around the world. She describes her schedule as non-stop, but something she thoroughly enjoyed. âIt was tiring and exhaustin g at times, but only because I wanted to do everything and experience everything,â she says. âI took all of the wine classes, all of the extra workshop weekends so I never stopped! I loved every exhausting minute of it and would do it all over again in a heartbeat!âPart of Le Cordon Bleuâs draw for international students is its unbeatable location in Paris, just a stoneâs throw from the Eiffel Tower. Cuisine and culture is part of the cityâs DNA and Elizabeth took full advantage. âLe Cordon Bleu facilitated incredible gourmet experiences around the city and throughout France,â she says. âWe had once in a lifetime dinners, lunches and tours, all as a part of our curriculum if we opted into them. Also, with our classmates, we would all run around town with each other checking out all things food!âA love affair with ParisElizabeth arrived in Paris intending to stay just nine months and remained for 13 years. Year after year, she found herself more entrenched there a nd still enchanted by the city. She married a Frenchman, Francois, and had a child. She continued working at Le Cordon Bleu, translating and teaching English, as well as leading gourmet tours of wine regions. She also curated an alumni blog for Le Cordon Bleu International and MasterCook, and created a gourmet food truck specializing in waffle sandwichesJob opportunities eventually mandated a move back to Southern California, which had undergone a culinary renaissance in the interim. Now living in Long Beach, California, Elizabeth is building her travel business with culinary-themed weekends in and around her home state, as well as France and Italy. www.chefelizabeth.com.Most of us probably wouldnât think of how traveling intertwines with destiny or how a trip abroad could foster a career move but perhaps that old adage about how travel can be life changing is making much more sense these days. This article was originally published on TravelSquire.

Why you should hit pause more often
Why you should hit pause more often Why you should hit pause more often In early August, Boomerang, the email scheduling tool that affords users a modicum of control over an overcrowded and frequently overwhelming inbox, launched a new feature called Inbox Pause. The new feature allows users to âpause (and unpause) your inbox at any time, temporarily hiding incoming messages from appearing in your inbox and preventing notifications.âThe theory behind the new launch, seems to piggyback off the notion that checking your email less often can both reduce stress and increase productivity. Pretty tempting in theory, right? In practice though, Iâm wondering about the reactions to receiving an autoresponder midday (or mid-creative streak) letting others know youâll be out of touch for a while. It could end up creating a vortex of additional needless emails which could cause inbox chaos for someone else.A short pauseMost of us could probably use some more pauses in our own livesâ"and they donât have to be long ones.âThe premise is that the only way t o pause is to take long breaks, I donât think thatâs the caseâ says Rachael OâMeara a sales executive at Google and author of âPause: Harnessing the Life-Changing Power of Giving Yourself a Break.âOâMeara told Ladders that she defines a pause as âany intentional shift in behaviorâ not based on âtime, resources or activity. Itâs what works for you.â And taking a pause isnât only for those who are independently wealthy âI think itâs a myth or a misnomer, that you need money to take a break,â OâMeara adds. âWho says you canât dedicate a weekend, or even start taking time on weeknights from 7 until 8 and do some journaling. Itâs about intention and dedicating and committing to what you want.â Or at least the notion of facing what might not be working and figuring out what you might want next.Forced breaksOâMeara identifies several signs that might inspire your pause. Maybe you used to love your job but now you loathe it. Maybe itâs worse t han that and your boss is the one to tell you that things just arenât working out. OâMeara defines these as forced pauses.A layoff or unexpected leave can provide a potential opportunity for you to really think, even if it doesnât seem like it at the time. OâMeara suggests that in those cases, itâs important to âReframe and decide what works for you. Maybe that job was the perfect job, but maybe itâs time to take your career and shift- renew and refreshâ"itâs all about what works for you.âA high-profile hiatusIn case youâre feeling overwhelmed by the social media vortex of thumb type and madly scroll, youâre not alone. Even the queen of overexposure, Kim Kardashian West, took a three-month social media hiatus after being robbed at gunpoint in Paris late last year.âShe was essentially stalked,â says OâMeara, who says on some level, âI love that story. It probably all became too much for her and maybe she was thinking to herself âYouâre burning out o n that thing.â Even if digital media is your job, you need to take a break sometimes.â If you think itâs not possible to take a digital break, OâMeara says that most actors or Hollywood stars are pausing all the time, in between movies or gigs, or by literally deciding not to work.In case youâd like to hit pause on your own career or social presence, OâMeara offers some tips.Own your pauseItâs okay to make an announcement and be somewhat vulnerable. Let people know youâre in between jobs or taking a few months off. OâMeara believes that while you run the risk of being judged, by setting up your communication plan youâre potentially opening many doors for people to both share their own stories or potentially find ways to connect or reconnect with you.Donât wait until youâre burnt outOâMeara says that there are always lots of signs indicating that youâre deep crispy fried. She says that âwhen youâre in a rutâ¦you might not be aligned with your streng thsâ which could lead to a vicious cycle of dissatisfaction fueled by burn out.If youâre not ready for a break or even a pause, âask people who know you what they think is going on with you and theyâll give you valuable feedback,â OâMeara explains. Iâd take it a step further and suggest only asking people who have your best interests at heart.Try it out: Taking a pause doesnât mean committing to anything other than taking some time to reconnect with things that are greater than you. Scandalâs Joshua Malina is very vocal on Twitter but takes time off from social media on a weekly basis to celebrate the Jewish sabbath with his family. A simple message of âShabbat Shalomâ lets others know heâs off social for a while. Try taking your own tech sabbath for even a few hours every weekendâ"youâd be amazed at what a palate cleanser it can be.The idea of a pause is more about breaking patterns and habits that no longer work âso we can emerge and reach our potentia l.â OâMeara says at the very least, try to keep checking in with yourself. âIf youâre constantly angry or dissatisfied, try to stay non-judgmental and see what is happening, what is not working? What could be different? What can be tweaked?âBecause most of us feel always on, itâs important to allow ourselves to hit pause whenever possible. âWeâre always on. Weâre on autopilot and itâs important to take breaks to be more conscious in everything,â says OâMeara. Taking that break allows us to find ways to take care of ourselves or as OâMeara puts it âPausing is in service to the doing, be more satisfied, live a fuller life.â
